Quick Take
Pine Hollow Golf Club is one of the best-value public courses in the Raleigh/Clayton area—consistently praised for strong conditions, pure greens, and a fun, balanced layout, with the main downside being pace of play during busy times.
Pine Hollow in Clayton, NC has quietly built a reputation as a go-to public track just outside Raleigh. It’s not trying to be flashy or overly difficult—but it nails what most golfers actually want: good conditions, fair pricing, and a layout that’s fun every time you play it. And based on overall golfer sentiment, it delivers on that more often than not.
The course plays as a traditional Carolina layout with a mix of open and tree-lined holes, offering a good balance between forgiveness and challenge. It’s not overly tight, but you still need to be in position to score. The routing gives you a little bit of everything—holes where you can be aggressive, and others where you need to dial it back and think your way through.
Course Conditions
This is where Pine Hollow separates itself from a lot of public courses in the area. The greens are the star of the show—consistently described as smooth, fast, and some of the best around. Fairways are typically in solid shape as well, giving you good lies and rewarding well-struck shots.
Tee boxes and bunkers are generally well-maintained, with bunkers getting positive mentions for having proper sand and being consistently playable. Overall, conditions here are reliably good, which is a big reason why so many golfers keep coming back.
Playability & Layout
Pine Hollow is a course that works for a wide range of players. Beginners can enjoy it without getting beat up, while better players will still find enough challenge—especially around the greens and with approach shots.
There’s a good mix of holes that reward precision and distance, and the course doesn’t feel repetitive. It’s the type of layout that you can play often without getting bored. It also has a reputation for hosting competitive events and qualifiers, which speaks to the quality of the layout and overall setup.
Overall Experience
The vibe here is overwhelmingly positive. Golfers consistently mention friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, and a well-run operation. The addition of GPS-equipped carts is a nice touch and adds to the overall experience.
The biggest knock? Pace of play. This course is popular, and for good reason—but that can lead to slower rounds, especially during peak times. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s something to expect.
There are also occasional mentions of inconsistent pro shop interactions, but those seem to be the exception rather than the rule.
Value
This is where Pine Hollow really shines. For the price, it’s frequently described as one of the best deals in the area. When you combine strong conditions, a fun layout, and solid amenities, it’s easy to see why golfers feel like they’re getting more than they paid for. Rounds range from $62-$84 for 18 holes plus cart depending on when you’re playing (weekday vs weekend, time of day etc).
Who Should Play This Course

My Take
This course lived up to the hype. It had some really nice holes and was truly a good balance where you had to be precise at times, but then on other holes was very forgiving. The greens were above average compared to a majority of other public courses in the area. Only potential downside is this course was packed and seems to be frequently, so maybe not ideal if you’re looking for a quick round. I went during a weekday around 1 and it was already packed. Just something to consider.
