Southern Wayne Country Club Review (Mount Olive, NC)
Overview
I got out to Southern Wayne Country Club in Mount Olive, and this is one of those courses that immediately gives off that old-school, small-town golf feel.
It’s not flashy. It’s not trying to compete with high-end courses.
But what it is — is a solid, well-kept local track that people clearly enjoy playing regularly.
You can tell right away this is the kind of place where:
👉 locals play all the time
👉 people know each other
👉 and it’s more about the experience than anything else
Overall this course exceeded my expectations, especially for the price point. They do a great job here.
Course Layout & Design
Southern Wayne is a par 72 layout that plays right around 6,300–6,500 yards depending on tees, so it’s not overly long — but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
The course has:
- A fairly open layout overall
- A good amount of doglegs
- Minimal water hazards
- Some sneaky holes that require positioning
One thing that stood out:
👉 it’s more about placement than power
You’re not just bombing driver everywhere — you actually have to think a bit.
There’s also a notable hole:
👉 #7 with an island-style green tucked behind a dogleg. This is my favorite hole on the golf course.
It’s not a “signature course” type design, but it’s:
👉 simple, playable, and enjoyable

Course Conditions
This is actually one of the biggest positives here.
From what I saw:
- Greens:
Smooth, roll true
Not crazy fast, but very playable - Fairways:
Solid condition, clean lies - Overall:
For the price point — this is a well-kept course
There are also mentions of:
👉 ongoing upgrades and improvements, which is a great sign
Staff & Experience
This is another strong point.
Consistent feedback:

People mentioned:
👉 great pro shop staff

👉 accommodating groups
One group even said they showed up last-minute with a big group and:
👉 got taken care of with no issues
That matters.
Things to Be Aware Of
Keeping it real — a couple things stood out:
- Cart availability / organization issues
- Some complaints about not enough carts
- Slow or disorganized starts
- Pace of play / management moments
- One review mentioned being rushed despite backups
👉 Not a dealbreaker, but something to keep in mind on busy days
