Southern Wayne Country Club Review (Mount Olive, NC)

Overview

I got out to Southern Wayne Country Club in Mount Olive, and this is one of those courses that immediately gives off that old-school, small-town golf feel.

It’s not flashy. It’s not trying to compete with high-end courses.
But what it is — is a solid, well-kept local track that people clearly enjoy playing regularly.

You can tell right away this is the kind of place where:
👉 locals play all the time
👉 people know each other
👉 and it’s more about the experience than anything else

Overall this course exceeded my expectations, especially for the price point.  They do a great job here.

Course Layout & Design

Southern Wayne is a par 72 layout that plays right around 6,300–6,500 yards depending on tees, so it’s not overly long — but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

The course has:

  • A fairly open layout overall
  • A good amount of doglegs
  • Minimal water hazards
  • Some sneaky holes that require positioning

One thing that stood out:
👉 it’s more about placement than power

You’re not just bombing driver everywhere — you actually have to think a bit.

There’s also a notable hole:
👉 #7 with an island-style green tucked behind a dogleg.  This is my favorite hole on the golf course.

It’s not a “signature course” type design, but it’s:
👉 simple, playable, and enjoyable

Course Specs

  • Par: 72
  • Yardage: ~6,300–6,500 yards
  • Course Rating: ~70–71 (varies by tee)
  • Slope Rating: ~120–125 range

👉 Translation:
A moderately challenging course that’s very playable for most golfers

What It’s Like Playing Here

This is just a good, straightforward round of golf.

From my experience and what others are saying:

  • It’s not overly punishing
  • It’s very walkable and playable
  • It’s the kind of course you can enjoy whether you’re:
    • a beginner
    • or someone who plays regularly

One review nailed it:
👉 “moderately challenging, great for all skill levels”

That’s exactly how it feels.

Course Conditions

This is actually one of the biggest positives here.

From what I saw:

  • Greens:
    Smooth, roll true
Not crazy fast, but very playable
  • Fairways:
    Solid condition, clean lies
  • Overall:
For the price point — this is a well-kept course

There are also mentions of:
👉 ongoing upgrades and improvements, which is a great sign

Staff & Experience

This is another strong point.

Consistent feedback:

  • Friendly staff
  • Welcoming environment
  • Easy to book and play

People mentioned:
👉 great pro shop staff
👉 helpful service
👉 accommodating groups

One group even said they showed up last-minute with a big group and:
👉 got taken care of with no issues

That matters.

Things to Be Aware Of

Keeping it real — a couple things stood out:

  • Cart availability / organization issues
    • Some complaints about not enough carts
    • Slow or disorganized starts
  • Pace of play / management moments
    • One review mentioned being rushed despite backups

👉 Not a dealbreaker, but something to keep in mind on busy days

Who This Course Is For

âś… Great For:

  • Casual golfers
  • Beginners and intermediate players
  • Locals looking for a consistent, affordable course
  • Easygoing rounds with friends

❌ Not Ideal For:

  • Players looking for a high-end golf experience
  • Anyone expecting pristine, premium-level conditions
  • Long hitters looking for a big challenge

Pricing

This is where Southern Wayne really stands out.

It’s a budget-friendly course, especially for the condition you’re getting.

  • Typical Green Fees
    • Weekday: ~$30–$40
    • Weekend: ~$40–$50
  • Deals / Value
    • At the time of this writing you can play for around $40 on weekends, which is solid value

👉 Bottom line:
You’re getting a full round of golf for $30–$50, which is hard to beat for a course in this kind of shape

Final Take

Southern Wayne Country Club is exactly what it looks like:

👉 a simple, well-maintained, affordable golf course
👉 with a laid-back, local feel

It’s not trying to be anything more than that — and honestly, it doesn’t need to be.

If you’re in Eastern NC and want:

  • a solid round
  • good conditions
  • and a great price

👉 this is absolutely worth checking out

Just don’t go in expecting luxury… go in expecting a good, honest round of golf, and you’ll enjoy it.
