Denson’s Creek Golf Course Review (Troy, NC)

Overview

If you’re looking for a challenging, affordable public golf course near Pinehurst, Denson’s Creek is one of those spots that flies under the radar—but probably shouldn’t.

I finally got out here and this is the type of course where you can tell right away:
👉 it’s not about perfection
👉 it’s about layout, shot-making, and value

Set in Troy, NC near the Uwharrie National Forest, this place has a completely different feel than your typical flat, open public track.

Course Details

  • Location: Troy, North Carolina
  • Designer: Phil McCriston
  • Par: 72
  • Length: 6,550 yards (tips)
  • Course Rating: 71.7
  • Slope: 124
  • Course Type: Public

This is a legit 18-hole layout with real character. The elevation changes alone make it play longer (and harder) than the yardage suggests.

Course Conditions & Layout

This is where Denson’s Creek stands out.

The layout is the star of the show.

You’re dealing with:

  • Constant elevation changes
  • Tight driving windows in spots
  • Doglegs that force you to think
  • Greens that actually require touch

This is not a “grab driver and swing away” course.

You’ve got to:

  • Pick targets
  • Control distances
  • Adjust for uphill/downhill lies

From my round + everything I’ve seen, the greens are usually the best part — aesthetically the look nice and in good shape, however not overly fast from my experience at least. Fairways and bunkers can be a little inconsistent depending on conditions, but nothing that ruins the round.

This is one of those courses where:
👉 good shots feel earned
👉 bad shots get exposed quickly

And honestly… that’s what makes it fun.

Pricing (One of the Best Value Courses in NC)

This is where Denson’s Creek really separates itself.

From the actual course rates:

  • Tuesday–Thursday: $20–$25
  • Friday: $20–$30
  • Weekends: $20–$45 depending on time

(All include cart)

You’ll also see weekend rates creep into the $60 range at peak times based on player feedback.

For a course with this much personality?

👉 That’s seriously good value.

This is firmly in that:
“affordable golf courses in North Carolina” / “best value golf near Pinehurst” category.

Practice Facilities & Amenities

Solid setup for a public course:

  • Driving range (shorter, but usable)
  • Putting green
  • Chipping area

Not a massive facility, but enough to get dialed before your round.

There’s also a clubhouse with food, and multiple people mention it being a legit post-round stop—not just an afterthought.  I will say though it is on the smaller side.

Staff & Overall Experience

This is where it’s a bit mixed—and I’m just being real about it.

The good:

  • Friendly, welcoming staff mentioned a lot
  • New management has been a positive for many players
  • Chill, local vibe

The not-so-good:

  • Some inconsistent service experiences
  • Occasional complaints about how situations are handled
  • Pace-of-play interactions can vary

My take after digging into everything:

👉 This feels like a course trending in the right direction, not a finished product.  I personally had a good experience with the staff there during my time and I’d definitely be back.

The Good

  • One of the most fun layouts in the area
  • Elevation changes make every hole interesting
  • Strong greens (usually the highlight)
  • Great value for the price
  • Not overly crowded
  • Hidden gem feel

The Not-So-Good

  • Conditions can be inconsistent at times
  • Bunkers and rough need attention occasionally
  • Drainage issues have been mentioned after heavy rain
  • Customer service isn’t always consistent

Final Verdict

Denson’s Creek is the definition of a “know what you’re getting” golf course.

If you want:

  • A perfectly manicured country club → this isn’t it
  • A fun, challenging, affordable round → this absolutely is

For me, this is the kind of course I’d:
👉 bring buddies to
👉 play multiple times
👉 enjoy more every time I figure it out

It’s a true hidden gem golf course in North Carolina that gives you a different experience than the typical Pinehurst-style track.

The greens really surprised me as they POPPED and looked in great shape, however didn’t roll nearly as fast as I anticipated.  The drive in from the direction I came had me driving by a prison as well, which I haven’t experienced too often approaching a golf course.  This course was also initially a 9 hole golf course when first opened.  Overall I really enjoyed playing here.  They had several beautiful holes and this definitely would be on my list of great budget courses to check out.

And at this price point?

It’s hard not to like it.
