Quick Take
Oak Hollow Golf Course is a rare find—a scenic Pete Dye-designed municipal course in High Point that delivers real shot value, strong visuals, and one of the more interesting public layouts in the Triad, though recent player experiences suggest some inconsistency in conditions and pace.
Oak Hollow isn’t your typical city course. Designed by Pete Dye, this layout brings a level of architectural thought you don’t usually see at a public price point. From the moment you step onto the property, it’s clear this isn’t just about hitting driver and hoping for the best. You’ll find classic Dye elements throughout—strategic angles, smaller undulating greens, visually intimidating tee shots, and water features that come into play on several holes. The routing around Oak Hollow Lake adds both beauty and challenge, giving the course a memorable, almost resort-like feel despite its municipal roots.
Course Conditions
Conditions at Oak Hollow tend to be a mixed bag depending on timing. The greens are consistently the standout, often rolling well and holding their shape. Outside of that, golfer sentiment points to more inconsistency. Tee boxes and fairways can occasionally feel a bit unkempt or overgrown, and general maintenance hasn’t always matched the quality of the design. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s noticeable—especially on a course with this kind of pedigree.
Playability & Layout
This is where Oak Hollow shines. The layout is challenging without being unfair, and it rewards thoughtful play. Dye’s influence is obvious—you’ll need to pick targets carefully, manage risk around water, and stay disciplined off the tee. It’s a course that gets better the more you play it. Mid-handicappers will find it engaging, while better players will appreciate the strategic nuances. If you’re searching for one of the more interesting public golf courses near High Point, this is absolutely in the conversation.
That said, pace of play can be an issue. Golfer feedback frequently points to crowded tee sheets and rounds that stretch longer than expected, which can take away from the overall experience.
Overall Experience
The setting is a major plus. Between the lake views, elevation changes, and variety of holes, Oak Hollow delivers a round that feels visually rewarding from start to finish. The grill and clubhouse area also get positive mentions, adding to the overall day.
Where things can fall short is in the player experience off the ball. A recurring theme among golfers is frustration with strict policies and inconsistent interactions with staff or on-course rangers. Combined with occasional overbooking, this can make the round feel more stressful than it should be.
Value
From a pure golf standpoint, Oak Hollow offers strong value—especially considering you’re playing a Pete Dye course at a municipal price. That alone puts it ahead of many courses in the area. But value is tied to the full experience, and when pace, conditions, or service dip, that value becomes less consistent.
Who Should Play This Course
Golfers who appreciate course design, enjoy scenic layouts, and want to experience a Pete Dye track without paying resort prices will get a lot out of Oak Hollow. If you’re someone who prioritizes pristine conditions, quick rounds, and a more relaxed atmosphere, it’s worth managing expectations before booking a tee time.
My Take
It’s really hard to complain about a golf course that is this affordable. Less than $50 for a full 18 plus cart is tough to beat at a majority of courses, especially for a fun Pete Dye layout.
For me the biggest pro’s are the layout and price. They had some really fun holes, especially along the water that I thought were really cool. In fact, there were many holes where they integrated the water. My favorite being holes 4, 5 and 6 (solid stretch of fun holes with hole 6 being a fun par 4 forcing you to either try to use the driver and get to the green in 1 where you have to carry the water, or play it safe off to the right) and hole 11.
I personally found the staff to be great, but that’s my one experience and it seems like some other have perhaps had some different experiences. The pace of play wasn’t awful for me either.
The con’s would be the conditions of the tee boxes and fairways needed a bit of work, maybe this was just the time I went as others seem to have different experiences. Some holes were in very good shape while others just seemed to need a bit of TLC. A few of the bunkers needed a little improvement too, but also could have been due to the weather.
All in all I think this is a very solid municipal option and the city of High Point is lucky to have access to this course especially at the rate. I’d play it again
