One of my fav courses for under $70 to play in the Piedmont Triad area ⛳️ ✅ Lot of risk reward holes on this course. ✅ Great conditions for the price #golf #golftok #piedmonttriad #ncgolf #golfcourse

Quick Verdict

Tucked just off Interstate 40 in Graham, The Challenge Golf Club offers a scenic and enjoyable round that lives up to its name without being overwhelming for the average golfer. Recent reviews and our on-course experience point to a course that’s steadily improving under relatively new ownership, with noticeable investment in upkeep and playability. Conditions are generally solid, greens roll well, and the layout keeps things interesting throughout the round. That said, the overall experience can vary depending on your interaction with staff and the specific situation on the day you play.

Course Layout & Design

The layout is where The Challenge really shines. The course manages to feel challenging while still being approachable, offering holes that reward good shot-making without beating you up for minor mistakes. Several golfers mention the course being enjoyable rather than intimidating, and that balance is evident when you play it.

The routing moves through scenic surroundings away from the noise of the highway, giving the round a relaxed feel despite its proximity to I-40. A handful of holes stand out as particularly fun, and the variety keeps the round engaging. One drawback: there’s no practice facility or driving range, so you’ll likely be heading to the first tee without much warm-up.  Although they do have some hitting mats and a net prior to the first tee.

Course Conditions

Conditions appear to be trending in the right direction. Multiple players note that the grounds are well cared for, and during our round the greens were in good shape and rolled relatively quick. While most of the course presents well, there are occasional spots where conditions fall slightly short, suggesting improvements are still ongoing. Overall, though, the course feels like one that ownership is actively working to elevate.  There is bunker work going on at the time of this writing so some bunkers appear different colors and some are still in the queue of being improved.

Pace of Play & Staff

Feedback here is mixed. Several golfers mention friendly staff and a welcoming environment, and our experience matched that sentiment. However, a few recent reviews describe frustrating interactions with course officials, including strict enforcement of group size rules and a negative encounter with a ranger. Those experiences appear to be outliers but are worth noting.

Value for Money

The Challenge earns strong marks for affordability. Golfers frequently describe it as reasonably priced, making it a solid option for a casual round that still offers a legitimate test.

Who Should Play It

Golfers looking for a scenic, affordable, and enjoyable round near I-40 will likely appreciate The Challenge. It’s a great fit for everyday players who want a course that’s engaging but not punishing—and one that seems to be getting better over time.

My Take

I love this course.  I find the layout to be enjoyable and really appreciate the work they’re putting in to improve the course.  I REALLY enjoy the back 9 as I find the layout much more fun and scenic and love the back 9 starting off with a fun dog leg left par 4 where you can try to launch it over the trees to get on the green in one.  My favorite holes are 4 (par 3 with the highway right behind you), hole 7, fun par 5 where you can get there in 2 with a good tee shot, but have to hit over water and hole 10 (just because you can try to pop it over the trees for an eagle look).

Another great course I’ve now played multiple times and will play again whenever I’m in the area.  New ownership is doing a great job so far IMO.
