Wildwood Green Golf Club (Raleigh, NC) – Carolina Golfing Review

I’ve played Wildwood Green a handful of times now, and every time I leave thinking the same thing — this course punches above its weight for the Raleigh area.

If you haven’t been, it’s a semi-private, 18-hole par 70 course tucked into North Raleigh, designed by John LaFoy and originally opened in 1986. It went through a major redesign in 1996 and got new Champion Bermuda greens in 2017, and honestly? It shows. The place has that private club feel without requiring a membership to get on.

And that’s really where Wildwood Green stands out.

What It’s Actually Great For

This is one of those courses where you feel like you’re getting a step up from your typical public track. A few things that make it worth the drive:

  • Fast, true Bermuda greens that actually reward good putting
  • Seven sets of tees — seriously playable for all skill levels
  • A layout that forces you to think off the tee, not just grip and rip
  • A driving range, chipping green, sand bunker, and putting green on-site
  • PGA Professionals on staff if you want a lesson

The course has produced some serious players — 28 major championship starts and 475+ PGA Tour starts by golfers who’ve come through here. That’s not a small thing for a daily-fee course in Raleigh.

The layout itself is a tree-lined suburban track that chews through distinct corridors with some elevation change. You’ve got a handful of water holes — including two par 3s that are all-carry over a lake — and the greens are large but can run very fast. The finishing hole is one of the tougher ones: a slight dogleg right with Carolina pines on the right, a bunker left, and a blind uphill approach to a deep, undulated green.

The Raleigh Golf Guide

Three free guides covering every public, semi-private, and private course within 30 miles of Raleigh — tee time rankings, current deals, and full membership breakdowns.

But Here’s The Truth…

The price point is real — this isn’t a budget round. At $83 with a cart on a weekday, you’re paying for the experience, and most people feel it’s worth it. But if you’re used to $40–$50 rounds, this one will feel like a splurge.

The other thing worth knowing: pace of play can be an issue. This came up consistently from the community:

  • Lots of walkers on the course (which is great, but can slow things down)
  • Busy tee sheets, especially on weekends — tee times fill up fast
  • A recent reviewer noted finishing in 4 hours, which isn’t terrible but isn’t fast either

If you’re going on a weekend morning, just build in the extra time. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s something to know going in.

Also — the course is relatively short from the tips at 6,473 yards, but don’t let that fool you. The tree-lined corridors and fast greens make precision way more important than distance here. If you’re spraying it off the tee, you’re going to have a long day.

So Who Should Actually Play Here?

If you’re:

  • A mid-to-low handicapper who wants a real test
  • Someone who appreciates fast, true greens
  • Looking for that semi-private feel without a membership
  • A visitor to Raleigh who wants one of the best public-access courses in the area

👉 This is your course.

If you’re:

  • On a tight budget (there are better value options in the area)
  • Looking for a quick casual round without much thought
  • Sensitive to slow pace of play on busy days

👉 You might want to look at other options first.

My Honest Take

Wildwood Green is one of the best semi-private courses in the Raleigh area, and the community backs that up — 4.5 stars from 433 reviews on GolfPass, with 92% recommending it. That’s not a fluke.

The greens are genuinely some of the best in Wake County. The layout is interesting and rewards smart golf. The staff is consistently praised as friendly and professional. And the fact that players who’ve competed at the highest levels of the game came through here tells you something about the quality of the track.

Is it the cheapest round in Raleigh? Not even close. But if you’re looking for a course that feels like a step up — and you want to play somewhere that actually challenges you — Wildwood Green delivers.

I’ll be back.
